Tell us a bit about your business

The Hampstead Butcher & Providore opened on Hampstead high street in 2010 and the second shop opened in West Hampstead last year. After 25 years in the restaurant business I wanted to create a top quality food and wine experience with butchery at its core. We focus on providing top grade British meat with known provenance along with a large range of cheeses, charcuterie, wines and beers, larder goods and lots of artisan cakes, chocolates and other fantastic food. Our staff are trained to be able to help our customer with their choices and we are constantly adding new products to our range. We host butchery classes and wine tasting events and we supply gift hampers and catering to our customers in the area.

What do you love most about Hampstead?  What makes it different to other areas of London?

The appeal of Hampstead is its urban village vibe, community spirit, the Heath and the cafes, pubs and restaurants and the ease of access to the West End and City.

What were your motivations for starting the business?

Hampstead used to have 7 butchers shops and soon before we opened the last one of these closed. There was a gap to fill and I was delighted to do so.

What are your biggest challenges as an independent butchers shop?

We have to provide a credible alternative to the competition. One that represents great value, offers unparalleled service and a lovely space to browse and sample. Of course we don’t enjoy the economies of scale that the larger operators do so we have to work much harder to make a difference to the lives of our customers, through the quality of the produce and the service, that our competition cannot do. Life-enhancement!

Besides yourselves, what’s your favourite independent Hampstead business?

Ginger and White is Hampstead’s best cafe and the ice cream at Oddono’s hasn’t been bettered by others. Judy Greens Garden Store is a life saver for anyone looking for beautiful gifts and the tailor on the top of Flask Walk is a genius!

What could local people be doing more of to help Hampstead traders?

Brave the weather when it’s raining, enjoy the sun when it’s shining but always support the quality retailers, cafes, pubs and restaurants in and around the village. The quality is exceptional and by spending shopping and leisure time and money in their own neighbourhood residents are re-investing in their own local economy and sustaining this essential amenity.
